陈波儿Chen Bo'er (1907–1951), born Chen Shunhua in a Chinese merchant family in Chencuo Street, Anbu, Chao'an, Guangdong, was a key figure of the Chinese left-wing film movement, a pioneer of New China's cinema, and the founder of the Beijing Film Academy. After studying in Xiamen, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Japan, she joined the Shanghai Art Drama Society in 1929 and became a left-wing film star: she and Yuan Muzhi co-starred in Plunder of Peach and Plum (1934), the first Chinese sound film, and she sang its theme song "Graduation Song". In 1935 she joined Song Qingling and fifteen others in petitioning for the release of the "Seven Gentlemen"; in 1938 she led the Women and Children Field Inspection Group across enemy lines in north China. She joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1937, sponsored by Ye Jianying and Li Kenong. During the War of Resistance she went to Yan'an; in 1945 her advocacy helped found the Yan'an Film Studio, where she became China's first female screenwriter. She wrote and directed the puppet animation Huangdi Meng (The Emperor's Dream, 1947), the first puppet film of New China. In 1950 she established the Acting Art Research Institute under the Film Bureau of the Ministry of Culture, the predecessor of the Beijing Film Academy, and served as its director; the film Zhonghua Nü'er, which she helped organize, won the Freedom Struggle Prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival — the first international award for New China's cinema. She was honoured as a "People's Artist" in 1951 and died the same year, on 10 November.
