Law Kar

罗卡

Law Kar is a Hong Kong film researcher, critic and curator whose work brings together film writing, retrospectives and interviews with filmmakers to explore cinema’s history and movement across regions.

About the Creator

Law’s work in film culture grew out of newspaper editing. Taking over the film pages of the Chinese Student Weekly in 1962, he helped develop a forum for reviews, themed features and discussion. He later worked on Hong Kong cinema retrospectives at the Hong Kong International Film Festival and programmes at the Hong Kong Film Archive, linking exhibition with historical research.

For the Filmmakers’ Choice programme initiated in 2013, participants selected three favourite films and discussed them in interviews and public talks. In his foreword to the Movie Talk Series, Law explains the emphasis on how films were made. Scripts, scene outlines and production sketches accompany the conversations, documenting creative practice alongside personal recollections.

At KwanTeo CineLab 2026, Law discussed exchanges between Hong Kong and Southeast Asia before and during the war. His account followed distribution networks, migrating filmmakers and circulating films, placing Hong Kong cinema within its connections to audiences and cultural activity beyond the city.
