Zhuang Muyang is an assistant professor at Tongji University’s College of Arts and Media. His research examines film, media and visual culture, including animation’s role in producing knowledge and expressing historical experience.
About the Creator
Zhuang studied art history and art theory at Peking University before completing a doctorate in film and media studies at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His work addresses animation, science education films and wartime cartoons; his teaching includes film history, genre cinema and animation history.
His KwanTeo CineLab 2026 presentation, on migration, accents and diaspora in Teoswa cinema, brought together Cai Chusheng’s movements between Shanghai, Hong Kong and Shantou, the circulation of Teochew films through Hong Kong and Southeast Asia during the Cold War, and Denis Do’s animated family histories.
In the lecture text, Zhuang approaches Teoswa cinema through the movement of filmmakers and films. Accents carry traces of different places and periods. Within this framework, Teoswa emerges through migration and creative activity, extending beyond a definition based solely on filming locations or filmmakers’ origins.
