KwanTeo Night — 2022
观潮之夜2022KwanTeo's New Year in Chaozhou (February 5–6, 2022): a retrospective exhibition, a tour tracing the burning of the Zhenhai Tower in 1911, an "Unfinished Draft" creators' forum, and at night four short films in the Spring Festival screening.
About the Topic
Chaozhou was where KwanTeo set sail in 2016, and the 2022 spring event returned there. The fifth-day tour, devised and led by Ding Quan and Chen Jianhang, revolved around the burning of the Zhenhai Tower in 1911 — telling the fate of one tower as the opening of a local modern history. That same day, producer Guo Xiaodong shared Zhang Minggui's The Tree House, bringing the production experience of Vietnamese independent cinema to a Chaoshan audience.
On the sixth day, the "Unfinished Draft" forum opened first — Wild Chaoshan, The Banquet, The Week After, and Out of Place entered discussion. At night, the Spring Festival screening ran four shorts: Huang Wenli's A Deng, Guan Zhenhai's Summer Is Over, Chen Ken's Want to Go Far Away, and Zhuang Canjie's Hakka Man. A creators' dinner closed the two days.
By this edition, "screening" was only one voice in a chorus: the retrospective, the tour, the salon, the forum, and the dinner filled two full days. Springtime KwanTeo had grown from a single screening into a multi-voiced scene around Chaoshan cinema.
