Overseas Chinese
Adapted from the stage play that swept Southeast Asia after World War II. It depicts the bitter lives of overseas Chinese in Nanyang; the on-screen route of 'Shanghai-Hong Kong-Shantou-Nanyang' corresponds exactly to the old Chaoshan saying '一上二香三叻四暹五汕六棉' (Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Siam, Shantou, and beyond). The film's scenes and props are steeped in Chaoshan folk flavor: people in wooden clogs, coolies in water cloths, markets selling guotiao soup, gifts of Guiyu mooncakes, tea leaves carried abroad, tin tea sets, bosses called 'tauke', and sea voyages blessed by the Goddess of the Sea. The soundtrack features the guofan (emigrant) songs and the lullaby 'Moonlight'.
