About the Work
In Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke's Thai film A Useful Ghost, Nat dies from dust pollution and returns to her husband by possessing a vacuum cleaner. Drawing on the Mae Nak ghost legend, the film moves between romance, comedy, fantasy and horror. Her return brings grief and family tensions into a story about the conditions under which people are accepted by others.
Teochew and Isan are part of the film's portrait of belonging. Suman speaks Teochew while discussing durian with her son's Australian boyfriend, then uses it to express affection for Nat. The film screened at KwanTeo Lab in 2026, followed by a conversation with the director.
