About the Creator
Gao Feng directed Heaven’s Beat, a feature about young people in Chaoshan trying to pursue music while negotiating family expectations. He has said that the experience of a local band led the filmmakers to build the story around a group of musicians.
Gao has described bringing Teochew opera and hip-hop together in the film’s music. He also recalls that the actors first rehearsed in Mandarin, then performed in Teochew.
