Shi Chuan is a professor at Shanghai Theatre Academy and a film researcher working on Chinese cinema history and film heritage. His practice includes restoration, dialect dubbing and curatorial work.
About the Creator
Shi connects historical research with preserving and screening films. He served as chief planner for the digital restoration and Shanghai-dialect version of Big Li, Little Li and Old Li in 2018, and later helped initiate the new Shanghai-dialect dub of Crows and Sparrows.
In a 2024 interview, he describes the need to distinguish contemporary speech from the Shanghai vernacular of around 1949. The dubbing also had to follow the original performers’ emotions, rhythms and breathing, keeping the new voices close to the performances on screen.
At KwanTeo CineLab 2026, Shi joined the discussion on restoration and the post-screening conversation for Crows and Sparrows with Zheng Dali. These exchanges gave audiences an opportunity to ask about the new version’s sound and the decisions behind its production.
