KwanTeo Night — Springtime 2023

观潮之夜2023新春

From the old city to a watch-strap factory (January 26, 2023, Jieyang): a walk through the ancient city on a route designed by the Wenhua Luojiao collective, then a screening of The Week After at the Jieyang watch-strap factory at night, with director Lu Xiaohao and the cast joining the Q&A.

About the Topic

The 2023 spring event chose Jieyang — KwanTeo's first Spring Festival there. The afternoon walk, designed by the Wenhua Luojiao collective, gave out-of-town audiences the texture of the old city. At night, the screening space was an unexpected old factory: the Jieyang watch-strap factory, successor of the 1958 Rongcheng Clock & Strap Repair Cooperative, later one of the four major strap producers in China, from which the Jieyang Watch Factory split off in 1975. Showing a film inside a decommissioned industrial space was itself an answer to the question of how image and place relate.

The film was Lu Xiaohao's The Week After — the director who would later carry Sunlit Place to festivals far beyond. In the Q&A, Lu Xiaohao and cast members Zheng Jieting, Ji Huanxin, and Chen Xiaofeng met the Jieyang audience face to face. From the 2016 screening at Hanshan Normal University to the 2023 spring screening in the Jieyang factory, KwanTeo's screening venues kept changing — conference halls, department-store cinemas, creative parks, century-old houses, old factories — while the appointment to bring Chaoshan cinema back to a live audience never did.
