Hong Kong Purchasing

香港代购

The 2016 documentary short Hong Kong Purchasing follows two mainland students studying in Hong Kong who work as cross-border purchasing agents alongside their coursework, each facing financial pressure and the risk of goods being taxed or confiscated at customs. The film runs 24 minutes and 46 seconds.

About the Work

Hong Kong Purchasing is a 2016 documentary short about two mainland students doing postgraduate study in Hong Kong. Alongside their courses, both carry goods across the border for other buyers, though for different reasons. The work brings their study routines into contact with the time demands of shopping trips and the possibility of customs taxes or confiscation.

Director Adam Yang initially questioned whether student purchasing work was worth the time it took. He recalls seeing one participant read an e-book on the train to the border after a day of shopping. The moment complicated his earlier assumptions. Yang also produced, shot and edited the film.
