Ah Girl

泡泡糖女孩

Ah Girl is Ang Geck Geck’s debut feature. Set in 1990s Singapore, it follows a seven-year-old navigating school and a family divided by her parents’ separation.

About the Work

While her parents pursue new relationships, Ah Girl and her younger sister move between households. She sells chewing gum at school and has a crush on a classmate, yet also takes responsibility for her sister. The story stays close to the children as decisions made by adults reshape their everyday lives.

The film draws on Ang’s childhood memories. Its 4:3 frame brings attention to the children’s expressions; Ang also connects the format to her memories of 1990s television. Ah Girl had its world premiere at IFFR 2026, where it received the Youth Jury Award.

At its KwanTeo CineLab screening on 16 July 2026, Ang joined a discussion moderated by Qieqie. Her account of developing the story, casting and preparing the young performers opened up the work behind the film.
