About the Work
Denis Do's animated feature project Rise of Yingge follows Lucy, a Chinese-European teenager who returns to Chaoshan for her grandfather's funeral. She enters a spiritual world shaped by Yingge dance, where she joins the 108 Heroes of the Marsh to confront inner demons. To protect an Yingge troupe and prevent the sale of her ancestral home, she trains in the dance and tries to resolve a long-standing conflict with her father.
The project combines Chaoshan Yingge dance, the heroic tradition of Water Margin, and a diaspora teenager's search for roots. It was registered as an animated film project in China in 2026 and was still in early development.
