KwanTeo CineLab 2026, themed "Blind Men and the Elephant," ran from July 11 to 19. Its opening event was the second Green Olive Night, hosted by Bai Laoshu after Chen Boqi's opening remarks on KwanTeo's twelfth year and the meaning of the olive.
Five recent Chaoshan short films screened that night: Lin Yupin's Watching the Tide, Lin Qiying's Turning Back, Lin Tingsyuan's Daydreaming Land, Huang Lei's Wu Yanqing, and Zhang Yang's Wedding Video Guide. The five films differed widely in subject — one gazing at the sea and homeland, one looking back at a relationship, one moving between documentary and fiction — and all five directors attended, sharing their creative backgrounds and answering questions.
After the screenings, the audience voted on red paper. Zhang Yang's Wedding Video Guide won the second Green Olive Award: a ceramic olive inscribed by artist Liu Qingyuan, along with a 10,000-yuan creative support grant. In his closing remarks, Chen Boqi drew the night together around the theme common to all five works — "looking back and looking forward": young filmmakers turning toward their origins while aiming the camera at the selves not yet arrived.
From Dream Cinema in 2025 to Hesheng Cinema in 2026, the Green Olive Night has become the CineLab's annual opening ritual. Together with the "Chaoshan Short Film Selection" of the Springtime KwanTeo Night, it forms KwanTeo's two fixed screens for young shorts — once in spring, once in summer, sending the Chaoshan cinema still in formation back to hometown audiences, year after year.
