KwanTeo Night — 2018
观潮之夜2018The first event of the Year of the Dog (February 20, 2018, Hesheng Cinema, Shantou): filmmakers from home and abroad touring the city, a dinner, and a night of five short films with a creator salon.
About the Topic
The Year of the Dog's spring event placed the city tour before the screenings: filmmakers walked through the Qiaopi Museum and the arcades of Little Park, gathered over dinner, and only then entered the cinema. This order — city first, cinema second — let out-of-town makers feel Chaoshan before watching it.
The five shorts that night were young and mixed: Guo Jialin's Chaoshan Sugar continued narrative explorations of the region; Liang Dehui's First Choice, Wang Meng's Fighting Fish, and Fang Zebo's Dream carried the edge of film-school work; and Out of the Garden (2017), an animation from Guangzhou University, reimagined the Chaoshan rite of passage. After the screenings, the creator salon moved to the Hesheng Reading Club and ran late into the night.
KwanTeo called this event "the first of the Year of the Dog" — and Springtime has been KwanTeo's opening ritual every year since. The promise of an "overseas KwanTeo" was kept in other ways in the years that followed: Chaoshan films traveling to Singapore, Indonesia, France, and beyond.
