潮糖Directed by Guo Jialin and produced by Shantou University, this documentary traces the history of Chaoshan's sugar industry through the region's everyday customs around sweets.
About the Work
Guo Jialin led the Shantou University team that made the documentary. Starting with the everyday Chaoshan custom of eating sweets, the film uses interviews and historical research to ask what lies behind that familiar practice. It follows sugar from daily life into the region's past, tracing the rise and decline of a local industry.
It was screened at Springtime KwanTeo in 2018, where Guo joined the post-screening conversation.
