Swimming Lesson

游泳课

In Deng Lianghong's short Swimming Lesson, a boy in a fishing village secretly learns to swim, hoping to cross the water and find the mother who never returned from sea.

About the Work

Set in the 1970s across the water from Hong Kong, Swimming Lesson follows Ankang after his mother disappears at sea. His father forbids him from going near the water, but Ankang practises in secret. As a typhoon approaches, an argument sends him towards the waves earlier than planned.

The film screened in KwanTeo Lab's Qing Ganlan Jiang (Green Olive Award) (TBC) short-film programme in 2025.
