About the Topic
The films in this collection can be followed through the places where cameras were set up. In the 1920s, Shanghai's Huaju Film Company shot exterior scenes for Bai Furong, Qing Nu (Slave of Love, TBC) and Ye Mingzhu (Night-Shining Pearl, TBC) in Shantou, although the precise sites have not been established. A local studio also filmed a feature in the city in 1927.
Decades later, Gezhou village in Shantou's Haojiang district became a location for both Homecoming and Eight Taels of Gold. Its lanes and buildings gave two different stories of departure and return a recognisable setting.
More recent shoots range across the region. Only Fools Rush In used locations on Nan'ao Island, while The Storm filmed in Shantou's Xiaogongyuan district. Xia Yulai was shot across Chenghai, Chaozhou and Jieyang; Dear You included Xiaogongyuan, the Chen Cihong Mansion and Jieyang's old city. Where the Sun Shines Bright took its cameras to Chifeng town in Chaozhou. Read together, these films show how visiting crews and local filmmakers have used the region's villages, streets and islands in distinct ways.
Chaoshan-language features bring another perspective to these places. Proud of Me began production at Chaoshan High School in Chaoyang, Back to Love filmed in the Nan'ao Island towns of Yun'ao and Shen'ao, and Lao Ye Bao Hao used locations in Puning, Jieyang. In these films, local settings are part of stories shaped by the people and languages of the region.
